Pediatric Dentistry: A Guide For Parents

When it comes to promoting oral health in kids and teens, parents play an important role. Early guidance on how to care for and protect teeth from decay and other conditions will encourage kids to take an active role in their oral health and will set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. When it comes to dental health, a little bit of prevention goes a long way. Here are some tips for  helping children to establish a good oral care routine.

Dental Care Tips For Children

  • Caring for babies: New parents should start by wiping their baby's gums with a soft cloth. This will not only keep gums clean, but also allow the baby to become accustomed to having their mouth cleaned. Though baby teeth are temporary, they are still vulnerable to cavities. Gently clean teeth with an infant toothbrush or cloth as soon as they come in.
  • Get regular check ups: Consistent dental check ups and examinations are a key aspect in maintaining oral health. Not only do these visits make sure teeth are clean and healthy, they also allow the dentist to detect any conditions or issues that may be forming. Regular visits help to establish trust and a level of comfort between a child and their dentist.
  • Establish a routine early on: Practice makes perfect, and dental hygiene is no exception. Parents can lead by example to demonstrate daily oral health care and teach children the proper methods for brushing and flossing. Some parents find it helpful to sing a special song while brushing teeth, or allow kids to pick out toothbrushes with fun characters or colors. This will keep children engaged and excited to brush and floss.
  • Promote good habits: In addition to daily hygiene and regular dental exams, proper nutrition is a cornerstone of maintaining oral health. Encourage children to make healthy food choices, including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and whole grains. Sweets and sugary drinks should be kept to a minimum.
