Dental Implants: Things to be Aware of

Dental implants make for a great long-term solution to fix the problems arising out of lost or severely decayed teeth, which need replacement. They are essentially artificial teeth that are surgically attached to the jawbone, instead of just being bridged together with the other healthy teeth, as in the case of fixed or removable dentures. This fusion makes dental implants a better option than dentures in a number of ways. However, if you've been thinking of dental implants, there are other things to know as well.

Things to Consider Before Getting Dental Implants

  • They are permanent – Dental implants become a permanent part of your mouth. The actual implant, which is made of the metal titanium, is surgically attached to your gums. When the gums have healed after surgery, the implant is fused into your jaw bone. After this, an artificial teeth is designed for your needs, fixed to the abutment of the implant and then screwed tightly into place.
  • They are better than bridges and dentures– While bridges and dentures come with accompanying repercussions (bridges make neighboring teeth more week and likely to decay, while dentures create fitting problems and often interfere with your taste), dental implants are one-hundred percent problem free. Because they are not attached to the nearby teeth, dental implants preserve their health. In addition, they look, feel and function like natural teeth, without interfering with taste.
  • They are costlier than bridges and dentures – Because quality comes with cost, dental implants tend to be costlier than bridges. The use of high-grade titanium, detailed surgical procedures and the expertise of oral surgeons, prosthodontists or periodontists adds to the overall cost. However, it helps to know that dental implants are incredibly long lasting. Most last a lifetime, without needing replacement ever. Dentures and bridges on the other hand, carry costs associated with subsequent tooth decay, mis-fittings and three to four replacements.
