The importance of the right toothpaste

Brushing and flossing the teeth is vital to achieving and maintaining a healthy smile. Patients who visit Montefiore Medical Center for dental services may often be asked by their dental hygienist or dentist about the products they use in home care. This includes not only choosing the right toothbrush, but choosing a toothpaste that is most appropriate for a patient’s unique needs.

Common types of toothpastes available over-the-counter

Below are a few of the typical toothpastes available that patients can choose from:

  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Tatar control toothpaste
  • Sensitive teeth toothpaste
  • Whitening toothpaste
  • Natural ingredient toothpaste

Choosing a toothbrush

In addition to choosing a toothpaste that meets the needs of the patient, patients will also need to find a toothbrush that functions properly for their smiles. Choosing a toothbrush may seem simple, but there are a lot of things to consider. Patients should avoid hard or stiff bristled toothbrushes, as these can often cause damage to the natural tooth enamel and cause gum tissues to bleed if patients brush too aggressively. Patients should also pay close attention to the contours of the toothbrush bristles as these can sometimes increase or reduce the risk of bleeding due to gum irritation. Some toothbrushes also have a rough surface on the opposite side of the head that is used to brush the tongue and scrape away any film and bacteria that might remain. Patients should also pay close attention to the size of the toothbrush head and ensure it is appropriate for their needs. Smaller toothbrushes designed for children will not work as well for an adult, no matter how diligent they are at brushing their teeth.

Combining the right toothbrush and toothpaste

With the right tools, patients can maintain their oral health and have a positive experience at every dental checkup! The use of the right products makes a difference.
