Adult: Broken Braces and / or Wires
- If a broken appliance can be removed easily, take it out.
- If it cannot be removed easily, cover the sharp or protruding portion with cotton balls, gauze or chewing gum.
- Monday through Friday, call the Orthodontic Clinic and then go to the Orthodontic Clinic as directed.
- Evenings and weekends call the hospital operator to speak with the dentist on call.
- If a wire is stuck in the gums, cheek or tongue, DO NOT remove it.
- Monday through Friday, call the Orthodontic Clinic where you receive treatment and then go to the Orthodontic Clinic as directed.
- Evenings and weekends call the hospital operator to speak with the dentist on call and go to the hospital emergency room.
- Loose or broken appliances usually do not require emergency attention. Go to the orthodontic clinic the next day.
