Graduates of the Montefiore Prosthodontic Residency Program acquire in-depth knowledge and expertise in the major subdivisions of prosthodontics: fixed, removable, implant prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics. They also study supportive subject areas including head and neck anatomy, oral pathology and physiology, dental materials science, the physiology of occlusion and dental laboratory technology. Residents have the opportunity to treat patients that present special challenges associated with aging, illness and chronic pain syndromes, such as temporomandibular joint disorders.

Approximately one-third of the program time is devoted to lectures, seminars, literature review; and special projects, while the remainder is spent providing clinical treatment and doing associated laboratory procedures. Students lead many seminars and are encouraged to present lectures on various aspects of prosthodontics. Combined seminars with other disciplines are offered, including orthodontics and oral surgery. Clinical supervision of general dentistry residents adds to the learning experience. There are no undergraduate dental students at Montefiore.

In this program, emphasis is placed on the practical application of prosthodontic knowledge and skills. Residents complete procedures in all phases of fixed and removable prosthodontics, including complete oral reconstruction utilizing a variety of methods and techniques. Within the hospital environment residents develop a close working relationship with colleagues in other dental and medical specialties. Residents routinely treat medically compromised patients. Montefiore has a large and diverse patient population affording graduates an outstanding clinical experience.

Montefiore has a very active Dental Implant Center. Our residents gain extensive experience with all phases of implant prosthodontics, including the surgical placement of implants. More than 2,500 implants are placed at Montefiore each year.

Montefiore has state of the art dental facilities. All patient records are electronic. The Department uses digital radiography exclusively in all 7 dental clinics and an in-house cone beam CT scanner is routinely used for implant treatment planning. Prosthodontic residents also have dedicated workspace in an up to date, well equipped dental laboratory staffed by two full time dental technicians.
