Orthodontics is one of five post-graduate training programs in the Department of Dentistry at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Admission to this program is highly competitive and the program itself is rigorous intellectually and physically. In addition to Orthodontics, the Department has approximately 80 other residents in oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics and general practice. The department has no undergraduate dental programs.
As a graduate of our orthodontic program, you will be a well-rounded clinical orthodontist, capable of integrating the art and science of the specialty, with the ability to handle a variety of therapies. You will develop the diagnostic, treatment planning and biomechanical skills necessary to treat an orthodontic population that includes: children, adults and patients with dentofacial and craniofacial deformities.
The didactic portion of your program will include graduate level lectures and readings in the biomedical sciences such as: biochemistry, biostatistics, epidemiology, craniofacial growth and development, embryology, genetics, head and neck anatomy, oral histology, pathology and physiology.
Clinical sciences include: adult orthodontics, early treatment, biomechanical principles, cephalometric radiology, clinical photography, craniofacial deformities, biomaterials science, occlusion/TMJ therapy, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, orthognathic surgery, endosseous and TAD implant anchorage, distraction osteogenesis, radiation physics, computer science, diagnostic imaging, practice management and research methodology.
You will have lectures and laboratory sessions in the following:
- Functional and removable appliance design and fabrication;
- Standard Edgewise Technique;
- Tip Edge Mechanics (Begg).
You clinical experience includes the following:
- Functional Orthopedics;
- Bio-progressive and Zero-based Concepts (Ricketts);
- Segmented Arch Mechanics (Burstone, Wilson);
- Straight-wire Technique (Andrews, Roth);
- MBT Technique
Seminars on current research and treatment methodology are complemented by evidence based literature review and journal club sessions. During your program you must complete a research project including presentation of a publishable paper.
Because the program is hospital based you will develop close working relationships with other specialists in dentistry and medicine. You will have an opportunity to see first -hand the relationship between prosthodontics, surgery, implants, and periodontics. As an orthodontic resident at Montefiore you will work with the oral and maxillofacial residents and faculty to assess and treat dentofacial deformities. As a team member of the Center for Craniofacial Disorders of Children's Hospital at Montefiore, you will learn to recognize and manage syndromic deformities, and to establish liaisons with non-dental specialists in plastic surgery, speech therapy, otolaryngology, pediatrics, neurology and genetics.
In addition, you will learn valuable diagnostic techniques not often included in orthodontic education, such as nasopharyngoscopy, video fluoroscopy, advanced diagnostic imaging as well as genetic counseling
You will have an opportunity to earn a Master of Science Degree in clinical research (CRTP) from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. You are encouraged, but not mandated to participate in this program. An important aspect of this program is that you will work with investigators from across the entire spectrum of clinical research activities. This can be accomplished because the "core competencies" required are the same across this spectrum. You will learn a common language and a shared set of skills. Investigators interested in translational patient oriented research and those interested in health services learn side by side. Scholars are drawn from all medical specialties and sub-specialties.
