The oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at Montefiore Medical Center is the largest program in the nation. We take 5 residents each year for a total of 20 residents. It is a rigorous program with high expectations for clinical expertise and academic excellence. Our residents routinely score in the high 90th percentile on the annual nationwide exam taken by all oral surgery residents. Our graduates take and pass the board exams.

Because there are 5 residents in each year group, you will have the benefit of support and guidance from other residents.  Working and studying together enriches the experience and greatly increases the depth and breadth of the learning experience.

Last year the faculty, staff and residents of the department treated over 16,033 patients. The oral surgery service did over 800 OR cases.

In addition to working at Montefiore, as an oral surgery resident you will also work in the clinics and participate in the operating room at Beth Israel Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center and Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Rotating through these different hospitals and clinics gives our residents exposure to the broad scope of the specialty, to different approaches and to different techniques. At Montefiore you will have a unique opportunity to work closely with faculty and residents from other dental specialties, especially prosthodontics and orthodontics. Since Montefiore has no undergraduate dental students, faculty members devote their time exclusively to the graduate residents. Intra-specialty cooperation is the norm at Montefiore.

The program has high standards for academic achievement and learning. In addition to a program of hospital rounds, weekly conferences and formal courses in physical diagnosis, oral pathology and anatomy, residents are expected to embark on an extensive program of reading and study. Weekly conferences and day-to-day interactions with the faculty allow the residents to apply that knowledge and expertise to real world treatment. Formal lectures comprise a portion of the didactic program but by far the majority of the teaching is done with the Socratic approach. Faculty members will be there, standing beside you in the clinic or operating room, not in their offices preparing lectures or doing research.

Four times a year the department sponsors a visiting professor. On those occasions the oral surgery residents have a unique opportunity to interact with world renowned leaders of the field in an informal, small group setting.

The chief resident is responsible for developing the call schedule.  For the first year of your program, you will participate in the call schedule developed by the chief resident of the service through which you are rotating.  Thereafter, unless you are on a rotation, you will be assigned to call by the chief resident of the oral surgery program at Montefiore.  Although it varies depending primarily on the hospital to which you are assigned, you can plan on being on call every third night.

• You will have had opportunities to see and participate in the treatment of many different oral problems.
• You will have gained real expertise in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
• You will have had a unique opportunity to work on a day-to-day basis with colleagues from other dental specialties.
• You will have had an opportunity to gain support and guidance from other oral surgery residents.
• You will have placed more dental implants than residents from any other program in the nation.
• In the operating room, you will do the cases, not just watch and hold retractors.

PGY-1

The first few months of your first year will be devoted to insuring that you have the basic skills necessary for off service rotations.  You will take an intensive course in physical diagnosis before beginning your off-service rotations.  While on rotation, oral surgery residents are expected to perform at the same level as first year residents of that service.  You will participate in all resident functions for that service (including call) and will be evaluated by the faculty and staff of that service.  In addition, you will be expected to participate in selected oral surgery activities during the course of the year.

PGY-2

The second year of the residency program, you will have additional off service rotations.  The rest of the year you will be on the oral surgery service working in dental clinics and participating in the operating room.  You will provide anesthesia for patients undergoing IV sedation in the clinics.  As a second year resident, you will spend 3 months at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, 3 months at Jersey City Medical Center and 3 months at Beth Israel Hospital.

PGY-3

During the third year, you will be expected to assume additional responsibilities.  You may routinely assist the chief resident in the operating room.  You will be expected to serve as a mentor for less senior oral surgery residents.  During your third year you will develop your oral surgery skills.  You will be expected to apply the expertise and knowledge you acquired on your rotations to the treatment of oral surgery patients.

PGY-4

As chief resident, you are responsible for the day to day operations of the out-patient oral surgery clinics.  The chief resident is responsible for the on call schedule and for operating room assignments.  During the year you will serve as chief resident at the Centennial Clinic, Schiff Clinic, Jersey City Medical Center and at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.  Responsibilities at each vary.

The Jersey City Medical Center

Located on a 15-acre campus overlooking the New York Harbor and Liberty State Park, the Campus includes two facilities, the Wilzig Hospital and the Provident Bank Ambulatory Center.  It is a Level II trauma center.  The Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Bronx Lebanon Hospital

Bronx-Lebanon is the largest voluntary, not-for-profit health care system serving the South and Central Bronx, with 965 beds at two major hospital divisions; two specialized long term care facilities, and an extensive network of clinics.  In 2006, the Bronx Lebanon network provided nearly 1 million outpatient visits, the third largest for a hospital in New York City.
